Global Reach
The first biofortified crop variety was released to farmers in 2004: a vitamin A orange sweet potato variety in Uganda and Mozambique. By 2023, a cumulative 443 varieties of 13 staple crops had been released in 41 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
By the end of 2023, over 330 million people were eating biofortified food, including 103 million on farm who ate what they grew. In addition, biofortified food available in the markets was enough to feed an estimated 227 million people.
